The basics
Why SVG is different
A PNG or JPG is a fixed grid of coloured pixels. Enlarge it past its native size and there is no more information to show, so it blurs. An SVG stores lines and curves as coordinates and redraws them at whatever size you ask for — which is why a logo saved as PNG goes soft the moment someone scales it up for a banner, and the same logo as SVG does not.
Scales to any size
A vector has no resolution. The same file is as sharp as a 16px favicon and as a shop-front banner, because it is redrawn rather than stretched.
Stays editable
Paths and shapes remain individual objects. You can recolour one, move another, or delete a stray curve — none of which is possible in a flattened raster.
Cutting machines need it
Cricut, Silhouette, laser cutters and CNC all follow paths. A blade cannot interpret a grid of coloured dots; it needs a line to travel along.
Prints at any size
No fixed resolution means no ceiling on print size. The same logo goes on a business card and a vehicle wrap from one file.
Small and web-native
A simple logo as SVG is often a fraction of the equivalent PNG, and it can be styled or animated with CSS — a PNG can do neither.

What to expect
What tracing actually produces
Worth knowing before you upload, because it decides whether this is the right tool for what you have.
Works beautifully on
Logos, icons, line art, silhouettes, signatures, stencils — anything with clear shapes and a strong split between subject and background. That is what a tracer is built for.
Struggles with
Photographs, gradients and fine texture. A traced photo becomes a handful of flat shapes — a poster-style effect rather than the photograph in vector form.
The layered mode is tonal, not colour. The tracer works on light and dark rather than hue, so a blue circle beside a red square comes back as shapes in a single colour at different opacities — depth and shading, not a separation of your original colours.
If you need true colour vectors, trace a clean shape here and recolour the paths in Illustrator, Inkscape or Figma. Every path comes out as its own editable object, so that takes seconds.
Settings
The two modes, and what to adjust
Black & White
One threshold, one clean outline. This is the mode for logos, stencils, stickers and anything headed to a cutting or engraving machine — a blade wants a single unambiguous path, not layers.
Threshold decides where subject ends and background begins. Too heavy? Lower it. Losing parts of the shape? Raise it.
Layered (up to 4)
Splits the image into up to 4tonal levels, stacked as separate paths. Keeps more of the original's light and shade, which suits illustrations and portraits-as-artwork.
Capped at 4deliberately: past that the tracer's threshold search takes minutes rather than seconds, for very little visible gain.
The detail setting is the one people miss. It sets the smallest speck worth keeping — turn it up to drop noise and stray dots from a scan or a JPG, down to hold on to fine line work. It fixes a messy trace more often than the threshold does.

Best practice
Getting a clean trace
- Start from the cleanest source you have — a PNG beats a JPG, because JPG artefacts around hard edges become traced noise.
- Remove the background first if there is one. It does more for a trace than any setting on this page.
- Higher contrast between subject and background gives the tracer a clearer edge to find.
- For cutting or engraving, use Black & White. A machine needs one unambiguous outline.
- If the result is speckled, raise the detail setting before you touch the threshold.
- If parts of the shape are missing, that is the threshold — raise it and try again.
- Trace a small, simple mark rather than a whole busy composition. Fewer shapes trace better and edit more easily.
- Expect to tidy the result in vector software. A trace is a very good starting point, not a finished logo.

Your image is uploaded over an encrypted HTTPS connection, traced in memory, and the SVG comes back in the same request. Nothing is written to disk, saved to a database or queued for later. Once the response is sent, nothing about it remains.

Frequently asked questions
What is SVG?
Scalable Vector Graphics — an image stored as mathematical paths and shapes instead of a grid of pixels. Because the shapes are recalculated at whatever size you display them, an SVG is exactly as sharp as an icon and as a billboard.
Which images convert best?
Logos, icons, line art and simple illustrations — anything with clear shapes and strong contrast between subject and background. That is what tracing is good at.
Can I convert a photograph?
You can, but manage your expectations. Tracing turns a photograph into a small number of flat shapes, so you get a stylised, poster-like interpretation rather than the photo in vector form. For a portrait or a landscape that is usually an effect, not a conversion.
Does the colour mode keep my original colours?
No — and this is the thing most people expect it to do. The tracer works on light and dark, not hue, so the layers come out as one colour at different opacities. It gives you depth and shading, not a separation of the blues from the reds. If you need true colour vectors, trace to a clean shape here and recolour the paths in vector software.
What is the difference between Black & White and the layered mode?
Black & White finds one edge and gives you a single clean outline — the right choice for cutting, engraving and logos. The layered mode splits the image into up to four tonal levels, which keeps more of the original's shading at the cost of a busier file.
What does the threshold control do?
In Black & White mode it decides where the line between subject and background falls. Raise it to capture more of the image as filled shape, lower it to keep only the darkest areas. It is the first thing to adjust when a trace comes out too heavy or too sparse.
What does the detail setting do?
It sets the smallest speck the tracer will bother to keep. Turn it up to drop noise and stray dots; turn it down to preserve fine detail, at the cost of a messier result on a grainy source.
Can I convert PNG to SVG?
Yes. PNG is the best starting point of the raster formats, because it is lossless — there are no compression artefacts around edges to confuse the tracer.
Can I convert JPG to SVG?
Yes. Be aware that JPG has no transparency, so whatever background is in the photo gets traced as part of the design, and JPG compression artefacts around hard edges can make a trace noisier than the same image as PNG.
Does transparency carry over?
Partly, and not the way people expect. The alpha channel itself is not preserved — the tracer flattens it. What does happen is that the SVG contains only the traced paths and no background, so anything outside those paths is transparent in the result.
Which formats can I upload?
PNG, JPG, WEBP, GIF, BMP, TIFF and AVIF, up to 20 MB each. GIF animation is not part of the conversion — only the frame is traced.
Is SVG editable afterwards?
Yes, that is much of the point. Open it in Illustrator, Inkscape, Affinity or Figma and every path is a separate object you can recolour, reshape or delete.
Does an SVG lose quality when resized?
No. Nothing is stretched — the shapes are recalculated at the new size. The quality ceiling is set by how good the original trace was, not by how large you display it.
Can Cricut and Silhouette use these files?
Yes. SVG is the standard format for Cricut Design Space and Silhouette Studio, and Black & White mode is the one to use — a cutting machine wants a single clean outline, not tonal layers.
Can Illustrator open the result?
Yes. SVG is a standard vector format, opened natively by Illustrator, Inkscape, Affinity Designer, Figma and essentially every vector tool.
Why does my trace look messy?
Usually the source is too detailed or too low-contrast. Raise the detail setting to drop speckles, adjust the threshold, or start from a cleaner image — removing the background first often does more than any setting here.
Are my files stored?
No. The image is traced in memory and the SVG is returned in the same request. Nothing is written to disk or saved to a database.
